  Southern California commuters will be greeted this morning by sprinkles of rain and light showers as a storm system moves into the area, bringing with it a slight chance of thunderstorms, forecasters said.

Between a 1/4 and 3/4 of an inch of rain was expected to be scattered across the region in what forecasters said would be a "very confused weather picture" throughout the Southland.

Rorke stated there was a 20% chance of thunderstorms that could happen "anywhere, any time." Wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph were forecast for the desert and mountain areas.

In the mountains, between five and 10 inches of snow was expected above 6,000 feet, prompting winter storm warnings to be issued.

The storm was expected to clear out by late afternoon or early evening, giving way to warm and dry weather for the rest of the week.

Temperatures are expected to climb about 10 degrees Tuesday, and another 10 degrees Wednesday, and warm offshore winds from the north will dry out the region, forecasters said.

"If we can get through the day, things will be quite nice," Rorke said.

Even though I initially didn’t do anything about it, last week I had lunch with Lauran Fleshman (Top USA runner) and Jaymee Marty (2012 Olympic Trials Qualifier) and both of them cross-train on the ElliptiGo. With all these signs, I know this device will be the best opportunity for me to stay physically fit and mentally sane until the Trials.

This weekend, I began training on the ElliptiGO for the Olympic Trials! This bike will keep my cardiovascular system strong along with building core and leg strength. Nothing is going to stop me from finishing the Olympic Trials. Nothing!

The bike is to ride and so much fun! I am able to simulate all my running workouts on this bike by changing the daily miles to minutes and keep my heart rate at the correct intensity for each mile. So, for speed work I will be flying up hills!

The bike takes a getting used to initially, and the first few times my hands hurt because I was gripping the handle bars so tightly. However, after a few days on the bike, I’m catching on. Don’t worry, I’m a safety girl, so I wear a helmet and watch for cars.

At first I wasn’t comfortable enough to go fast enough to get my heart rate up, but after the first day I settled in, found a few uphills and my heart rate got right where it needed to be!

2. How many students can you handle at one time?

The answer to this question depends largely on your staff, volunteers, and the number of horses available. You should also think about space, tack, and the age level of students. Caring for thirty eight-year-olds during an eight-hour camp session is harder than you think! The amount of staff or volunteers should have at least a 1:1 ratio with your campers.

3. How will you advertise?

If you wish to have a camp, you must first have campers! Some stables only open their summer camps to current students, in which case you would not need to advertise. But if you want to open your doors to the public, you must have some way of advertising the summer camp. Flyers, brochures, newspaper ads, and direct mailings are all great ways of advertising your services.

4. When will your camps be held?

You should have dates, times, and lengths of sessions prepared well ahead of summer. If it is an overnight camp (assuming you have huts, tents, or cabins in which your campers will stay) then 5-7 days is average. Day camps last between one and two weeks, and some camps last all summer. Then, decide how long they will last during the day. Parents will need specific times to pick up and drop off their children. You will have to arrange for staff and volunteers during each session, so coordinating those dates and times well in advance.

5. What will your camp offer?

Besides riding, camps are usually places where students learn to groom, tack, clean stalls, and participate in other adventures. I like to have a veterinarian visit once during every session so that students can learn about illnesses and injuries. I also usually schedule a farrier to come out and demonstrate how to shoe a horse, and we have mini-clinics on horse anatomy and physiology, how to care for the animals, how to feed, and what to do during emergencies.

6. How will you group your campers?

Some camps have programs for riders that have never ridden before, while others are geared toward more experienced riders. You will have to plan based on those types of riding levels, and schedule activities that will be new and interesting to those levels. For example, an experienced rider doesn’t need to learn about grooming, but would probably be interested in a class on braiding manes and tails.

Those questions answered, you are ready to begin planning. I advise that you create a welcome packet for the parents of riders that will be attending your camp. The welcome packet should contain the following information:

1. An introduction to your farm and what your qualifications are.
2. A detailed explanation of what will do and learn at camp.
3. A sheet listing the hours and dates of each camp session.
4. A medical liability form.
5. A standard waiver for all riders.
6. A list of things that riders should bring with them to camp.
7. Pricing, deposit and refund information

This will prepare the parents for what they should expect, and will diminish the possibility of confusion or mix-ups.

Next, decide what your students should bring with them to camp. I advise the following:

1. A helmet (either biking or riding, unless your furnish them)
2. A sack lunch (for Day Camp, if it lasts through lunchtime)
3. A thermos full of water.

Having just recently visited the Potomac River, many memories have been resurfaced from my life. The memories of the time I spent with my aunt at the river, when I was a child became most vivid. She was an artist, a wife & mother, a true Christian, and a maritime heart. In visiting the Potomac River I was ever reminded of her, and life as it had been fifteen years ago staying with her at the cottage on the river. She went to rest in 1993 of cardiac arrest. With her passing, her ashes were set to river. Though it has been thirteen years, she still lives on in my heart.

The Christian paradox is that you must die in order to have eternal life. Everyone leaves some sort of legacy in the world after they pass. Whether you have done something astounding to create some social precedent or simply produced an heir in this world, you have left a mark that lives beyond you eternally. Every time I look at the river I think of my aunt, her talents, kindness, and faith in the face of adversity. Her legacy is with that river, as all the memories come alive from it.

Many other beliefs say that to have everlasting life you are to be born again, reincarnated to another form. In life my aunt’s heart was at home on the river. Now she is of the river. The river flows constantly with life as she is with it, part of it. In this way she will never die.

In the midst of death life goes on, forever affected by it.
